The Ice Storm of December 2013 was incredible, providing many beautiful photos of ice-covered trees and berries. The storm did more than cover nature with sheets of ice, it also covered the roads and sidewalks, making walking and driving very dangerous.
Due to the lack of available alternatives, many homeowners, businesses, and city officials were forced to lay down tons and tons of road salt to make our roads and sidewalks safe during the holiday season. During this time, our Kids Against Road Salt were shocked by the piles of salt all over sidewalks in the GTA.
Clearly, more awareness is needed to educated people on the hidden costs, both to the environment and to infrastructure, before alternatives are made available and used as readily as salt.
