There are very deadly chemicals in the road salt that most people don’t know about! The chemicals in road salt could be any of: sodium chloride, calcium chloride, magnesium chloride and potassium chloride used for de-icing, anti-icing brine. Sometimes even rat poison is one of the ingredients!
All of the Road Salt used in the GTA ends up in Lake Ontario: our source of “clean” drinking water!
How does it get to the lake? Salt water washes into rivers, creeks or sewage drains to reach the lakes. Salt dissolves into the water, making it impossible to purify the water, except through distillation.
So, in the end, we are really just drinking road salt in the spring when all the road salt gets washed off the road. It’s a smarter and much healthier choice to say NO to using salt on your roads, driveways and sidewalks this winter!
